Findings
From the data collected at the section of the river outside
St Andrew's in the January to March period, we found that :
- The temperature of
the water in the river ranges from about 21oC to 27oC.
The average temperature is about 22.4 oC.
- The pH of the water
ranges between 7.5 to 8.3.The average pH of the water is 7.8. The pH
is slightly higher during the high tides. At the Marina South, the pH
of the water was found to be about 8.5.
- Salinity of the
water in the river was high in the range of between 10000 ppm to 17000
ppm during the high tides, with an average of about 14000 ppm and
about 3000 ppm to 10000 ppm when the tide is low.
- Dissolved oxygen is
about 4 to 6 mg/L at different times of the day. The average is about
5.2 mg/L.
- Conductivity is a
constant high of 20000 mS/cm for most of the days.
- The water in the
river is generally clear as students collect the water which lies a
few metres away from the banks and also if the sediment at the bottom
of the river bed is not disturbed. Also noticed was that the water may
get muddy if there was a heavy downpour before the water testing
exercise

As
of 20 Apr 2007, the total number of fish caught to date is 65 comprising
62 tilapias, 1 mudskipper and 2 groupers. Our traps were put at the same
spot for at most 2 to 4 hrs on the day of the data collection. The river
is breeming with tilapias. It is not uncommon, if you take a quiet walk to
the river, to see a lot of fish activity by the side of the banks. We also
on many occasions witness men casting their lines into the water
attempting to land the big one. There
are as expected also a lot of guppies thriving in the water. Mudskippers
will eventually disappear from this section of the river and will probably
be found nearer the river mouth where they favour brackish water. In
2005, our initial study found small crabs along the banks of the
Kallang
River
. From the period from January 2007 to March 2007, no crabs have been
sighted along our side of the river. |

The
temperature of the surroundings naturally varies throughout the day. These
are taken at different times of the day, ranging from early morning to
afternoons. The
temperature of the water remains more or less constant, about 22 degrees. |

|

As the pH readings were taken at different
times and at different levels of tides, there is a slight variation in the
data. Average pH is about 7.8.(pH for pure water = 7.0)

Salinity of the water in the river also
depends on the tide.
|
|
|
|

The average amount of dissolved oxygen is
about 5.2 mg/L.

|
|
|

The UV level also depends on the time of the
day and the weather conditions.
